Who will be next in this systematic misogeny that murders?

Another harrowing murder, a 16-year-old Iranian girl, Armita Geravand, has plunged the people of Iran into a state of shock and outrage, shedding light on the turbulent political situation in Iran, particularly in the wake of Mahsa Amini’s murder by the morality police of the Islamic Republic.

Armita Geravand ,fell into a coma, as reported by human rights activists, and is now passed or to be precise, murdered. This dire situation unfolded as a result of a confrontation with the ‘morality police’ in the heart of Tehran, allegedly stemming from her violation of the archaic dehumanizing hijab law.

The episode has once again brought to the forefront the deeply contentious issue of mandatory hijab regulations that have been a source of long-standing tension within Iranian society. Armita Geravand’s ordeal was captured on camera, showcasing the troubling encounter that has ignited a fresh wave of debates and protests in the country.

The incident began when Armita was filmed boarding a train without wearing the mandatory head covering. This seemingly innocuous and by any standards normal act soon spiraled into a confrontation with the morality police, revealing the profound divide between theocratic conservative regime and the aspirations of the younger generation for greater personal freedom and basic human rights.

The situation escalated further when other young women on the train took matters into their own hands, forcibly removing Armita from the train at a metro station. They laid her on the platform, where she remained motionless, unconscious, and was later rushed to a hospital. The incident has raised questions about the role of vigilantism and the enforcement of the hijab law by islamist citizens, as well as the use of force by the morality police and the systematic mysogyny

This has added fuel to the already simmering discontent in Iran. Systematic misogyny remains a deeply entrenched issue within the Islamic Republic of Iran, where women continue to face pervasive gender-based discrimination and restrictions on their personal freedoms. The country’s legal framework, particularly in matters concerning family, inheritance, and divorce, always places women at a significant disadvantage. The mandatory hijab law, enforced by morality police, restricts women’s choices and infringes on their right to self-expression. Despite the resilience and activism of Iranian women who tirelessly advocate for gender equality and women’s rights, the deeply rooted institutionalized misogyny poses a significant challenge to achieving meaningful progress in this critical area.

As the world watches passively, Armita Geravand’s condition non-chalantly, her ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those striving for change in a nation grappling with competing visions of its future, a nation whose ultimate goal is basic human righ.
